Game day, it’s what so many athletes, coaches, and organizations spend their practice days preparing for. Whether it is in Baseball, Basketball or Football at any level, coaching can be the hardest job on the field, court or diamond. Fans like to sit back in their living rooms or in the stands and speculate how they would have done this or that different, played this player instead of the other, called this play instead of that play and the list goes on and on, but do we really realize what it takes to be a coach at the professional or even the college level? When the entire fan base and organization is looking to you to coach their favourite team to a championship it’s easy to realize once you look at it, that this is a lot of weight for one to carry on their shoulders.
Being a head coach comes with its ups and downs as you would expect from any other job in this world but perhaps the worst con of being in such a position is the ridicule that comes with a tough loss or a bad decision. Some games will always be harder to win than others and some decisions will be harder to make than others when the moment comes. Every game is going to call for a different game plan, a different strategy; there are different factors to consider. Certain players that may be better at some things than others or a team plays better on one side of the ball than the other and next game chances are it won’t be the same. Calling the plays, calling the shots, and the ability to make those decisions is the reason that the franchise owners of your favorite teams have chosen that person to be the coach to lead your team to victory.
Sometimes we forget what it takes to be that person. We think we can do better, we think that we could have done something different, we think that the decisions can be made in the snap of your fingers, but are really that easy? If it were that simple why can’t we go to our local job fairs and apply for these positions? Next time you’re watching a game, try something different. Don’t pay attention to how many points your favorite player has scored or how many yards they have rushed or how many RBI’s they’ve batted in. Just one time look at the strategy of the game put yourself on the sidelines and you might just see that it’s not as easy as you may think.
